Orthodontic Emergency Advice

Posted .

During orthodontic treatment, certain issues can occur, especially if you do not follow Dr. Bryan and Dr. Davis’s instructions. Things like neglecting to wear a mouth guard when playing sports or eating foods that you shouldn’t can damage your braces. Keep in mind that your braces may also need fixing at some point even if you diligently follow all of our orthodontist’s instructions; accidents do happen. In the case of an orthodontic emergency, call Northwest Dental Associates for an appointment and follow the instructions below to lessen the issue until you can visit our office.

Loose or Lost Band

Orthodontic bands can become loose. If this happens, schedule an appointment so that our orthodontist can recement or replace it. In the case that a band comes off completely, do not try to put it back on yourself. Bring it with you to your appointment.

Loose or Broken Bracket

If you eat something sticky or hard, or if you suffer an injury to the face, a bracket can weaken, or even break. A loose or broken bracket can poke into your gums, cheek, or tongue. Place orthodontic wax over the bracket to provide relief. Visit our office so that we can repair or replace the bracket.

Protruding or Broken Wire

A protruding or broken wire can injure your tongue, gums, or cheek. You can try to use a pencil eraser to push the wire into a more comfortable potion. Keep in mind that this may not work. That being the case, place a small amount of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire. Do not cut the wire, as the piece of wire can accidentally be ingested or inhaled. If a poking wire has caused a sore in your mouth, rinse with salt water or an antiseptic rinse. Contact us for an appointment.
