A Dental Implant Can Be Installed to Replace a Knocked Out Tooth

Posted .

Each one of your teeth is held in its socket by a series of strong periodontal ligaments. Unfortunately, there are extreme situations where a hard fall, blow to the face or other unforeseen accident can sever these ligaments and effectively knock the tooth out. In most cases, some aspect of the tooth remains in the socket and thus it cannot be saved. Dr. Bryan and Dr. Davis’ only effective course of treatment is to extract the tooth to prevent further pain and complications.

Once your gums have healed the doctor can help you understand your restorative options. One of the most effective ways to do this is to have a dental implant installed directly into your jaw.

A dental implant can be installed on an outpatient basis.  Some patients chose to be fully sedated for this procedure based on their level of dental anxiety. If sedated, you will need to arrange to have someone drive you home after the procedure and help you out until you regain full consciousness.

During the procedure a small incision will be made in your gums, and a titanium abutment is then screwed into a narrow channel. Titanium is a biologically safe metal that, in time, will fuse to your natural bone tissues.

After your gums have healed and the implant has fused with the bone we can start the process of fully restoring the tooth with a standard crown.

If you’ve had a tooth knocked out, you should call Dr. Bryan and Dr. Davis’ office in Medford, Oregon at 541-779-3993 to explore your treatment and restoration options.
